Why It Matters
Well-planned community infrastructure protects public health, property and the surrounding environment while supporting development from individual dwellings through to shared schemes. Considering design, management, funding and regulatory requirements together creates solutions that are practical, consentable and reliable over the long term.

Aditional Benefits
An integrated approach can reduce delivery risk, avoid unnecessary infrastructure costs and allow systems to be staged as communities grow. It also improves coordination between developers, communities, operators and regulators, supporting clearer decisions and more consistent environmental performance.
Mortuary Fluids
Communities across Aotearoa New Zealand are increasingly asking councils and wastewater providers to separate mortuary fluids from municipal wastewater systems. For many iwi and communities, the discharge of mortuary fluids to water is inconsistent with cultural values and expectations around the respectful management of their deceased.
LEI has been at the forefront of developing practical, tikanga-informed solutions for managing mortuary fluid discharges separately from wastewater networks. We work with councils, iwi, funeral directors, and wastewater providers to investigate options, engage stakeholders, assess environmental effects, and design land-based discharge systems that are both culturally appropriate and technically robust.
Our work has helped deliver New Zealand's first dedicated mortuary fluid land treatment system, demonstrating how community aspirations can be translated into practical infrastructure solutions.
